We are in Caselle di Sommacampagna (VR), together with Marco Bianconi, a small fruit grower who owns one hectare of blackberries, one hectare of blueberries and one of redcurrants.
We are inside a blackberry orchard where a dual protection system has been installed: anti-hail and rain protection featuring the Multishield system, so that the blackberry, a very delicate crop, is better protected from adverse weather conditions, especially rain.
In addition, this system allows Marco to reduce the use of fungicides and, most importantly, to harvest the fruit even in the morning when there is usually dew, which is not present under this cover
From a technical perspective, the Multishield system has the advantage of allowing the covers to be opened and closed by sections, making it possible to create different microclimates within the same plantation and to manage different agronomic stages and ripening times. It is a very simple and fast system that helps save time and labor costs.
We then moved to a highly intensive blueberry system with anti-hail protection, featuring a row spacing of 2.80 meters, designed to maximize production.
The plants are grown in pots because they require a lower pH than other crops, and this method makes it possible to recreate optimal growing conditions.
Blueberry cultivation is a very versatile activity that can be carried out at different latitudes.
The primary need is protection against hail, which helps the farmer consistently supply the market.
