As our clients already know, at Valente we pursue the continuous improvement of products and solutions for agriculture, combining our Research & Development efforts with on-site practical tests.
The first step involves the design, the analysis on structural calculations and prototypes. Then, we carry out lab tests to obtain a finished product that should meet all the requirements it was designed for. However, this is only the starting point (and here comes the kicker); theory must always be followed by practice, trials, errors, corrections, to finally get to a result that truly meets the expectations it was designed for. This is how we work, and this is how we also created our Test Fields, which you have probably heard of.
This is only our most recent addition (and it will certainly not be the last); it all started much earlier, more precisely 20 years ago.
It was the year 2000 when in an area adjacent to the company plant, we started a vineyard consisting of five 30-metres long rows and installed a complete system supported by PCR posts.
We chose the Merlot grape variety and the system, after the initial start-up period, reached its full productivity over time.
Obviously the aim was not merely producing wine, which in any case has given us great satisfaction over the years, but having the chance to test our products, posts above all, in the normal running of a productive vineyard.
We are therefore talking about exposure to weather conditions, the use of chemical products to control the growth of weeds, inter-row mechanical weed control, treatment with plant protection products, and so on: all of the elements that can stress the system and affect its reliability and resistance.
In 2011, we reinstalled the posts for the first time, replacing the PCR posts with the cutting-edge iron posts which, although updated in some details and with modified profiles, are those currently in production:
- ONE posts – hot-dip galvanizing applied before processingthe product
- EVO posts – hot-dip galvanizing applied before processing the product,coated with the EVOLUZINC protection (zinc-magnesium-aluminium alloy)
- EKO posts – double protective coating; the first layer consists of a hot-dip galvanizing that is applied before processing the product; the second layer consists of a “rusty-like” powder-coated polyester

But we didn't stop there; in the wake of our constant focus on innovation and sustainability in the agriculture industry, a few days ago we finally uprooted the vineyard to replace it with a new disease-resistant Merlot grape variety, so as to reduce treatment and the consequent environmental impact.
We obviously analyzed the extracted posts, both visually and mechanically, to check their dynamic behaviour and the level of wear after a period of 9 years, during which they were subjected to all the stresses described above.
The results can clearly be seen in the images below:
- The ONE post (second photo): shows traces of oxidation and at collar level there is a clear sign of rust on the left side.
- The EVO post (third photo): shows slight traces of oxidation on the part that was into the ground but there is no trace of rust.
- The EKO post (fourth photo): shows only a slight dulling of the coating in the part of the post that was buried, but no signs of rust.
What considerations can we draw from these results?
The first is that, from a functional point of view, all three posts have worked well. It is also clear that the EVO and EKO posts are more reliable than the standard ones, due to the zinc-magnesium-aluminium alloy used to galvanise the EVO post and the double protective coating applied to the EKO post. However, although the ONE post visually shows signs of deterioration, this does not mean that its functionality and dynamic characteristics have been affected, nor that this will happen in the short to medium term; the instrumental data tell us that the post will continue to perform well and will last without any problem for several more years.
The choice of a post, and of all the products required to complete the system, must therefore be based on the time horizon of a client’s specific needs.
If you are planning to change the vineyard after 15 or 20 years, ONE post will probably turn out to be the most suitable option. On the other hand, if your project aims to last 30 years or more, then the choice should fall on the EVO post and the EKO post, the latter being particularly suitable for areas with landscape and visual impact constraints.
