Steel is the construction material “par excellence” thanks to its mechanical properties: elasticity and strength are its peculiarities, but it also has high propensity to oxidation.
Consequently, when steel is exposed to weather conditions it tends to oxide, undermining its durability.
There are several ways to prevent oxidation, these are the three most popular ones:
- addition of other elements to make it self-repairing;
- surface coating;
- hot-dip galvanizing, which can be done before or after processing.
As for iron posts, you can find any type of protection method on the market and each company proposes its own as the best one.
But is this really true? Are there coatings or methods that are better than others? How do we pick the best one?
To provide an unbiased feedback on these questions, we carried out a comparative test on all types of iron posts.

Salt spray testing is ideal for testing the corrosion resistance of metals. The samples are placed inside a “salt fog chamber”, an apparatus that simulates their exposure to marine type atmospheric conditions, the most aggressive environment for steel.
Samples of iron posts were exposed to salt spray for a total cycle of 500 hours. Every 100 hours we sprayed the main products used for the management of vineyards, recreating the conditions that bests simulates the environment where our posts are used.
We used the following products:
- TRASFOR K,fertilizer
- ENTEC 25+15,fertilizer
- TOUCHDOWN,herbicide
- POLYRAM DF,organic fungicides
- AMMONIUM SULPHATE,fertilizer
- POLTIGLIA DISPERSS,copper fungicide
Here are the results of the test:
1) COR-TEN post: abundant rust formation, easily removable from the post;
2) Hot-dip galvanized post, before the processing: abundant rust on the entire surface;
3) Hot-dip galvanized post, after the processing: some rust stains on the surface;
4) Hot-dip galvanized post, after the processing: some rust stains on the surface;
5) Hot-dip galvanized Valente post, after the processing: some rust stains on the surface;
6) Hot-dip galvanized Valente post, before the processing: no traces of rust on the surface;
7) Hot-dip galvanized Valente post, before the processing: no traces of rust on the surface;
8) Hot-dip galvanized Valente post, before being powder-coated: no rust at all;
The results are very clear to us and tell us exactly what to do.
