Today we are going to tell you the story of Cantina Borgo del Baccano, a young winery and our customer since 2022.
The company is located in the municipality of Campagnano di Roma, on the Via Cassia towards Viterbo, in the area known as Valle di Baccano, which gives its name to the Borgo del Baccano wine.
It was purchased in 2020 by Rocca Commodity, an agricultural limited liability company that covers an area of approximately 50 hectares. On the land that was initially used for grassland and pasture, an improvement project has been started, which envisages the creation of vineyards covering approximately 18 hectares, of which 8.5 hectares have already been planted in 2022-2023 and a further 9.5 hectares are in progress.

On approximately 10 hectares, an intensive olive grove is planned, making use of the varieties selected by Prof. Fontanazza, in particular the FS17 Favolosa.
The Rocca Commodity Company's main interest, however, is in vineyards and the construction of a processing cellar for the production of certified organic PGI Lazio red and white and PDO Roma red and white wines. The company, in fact, has been converting for two years and in 2025 it will be certified for all its products. A production chain is also envisaged for the olive groves, with the implementation of a mill to meet the needs of the olive groves and possible processing for third parties.
Vegetables are also grown on the farm in a crop rotation for an area that will reach 5 hectares in 2024.
As far as the technical characteristics of the vineyard are concerned, the system has been designed for an integral mechanisation of the cultivation operations, entirely built with galvanised steel posts ONE 50x40 h 2.50 intermediate N hooks and ONE TOP L=mt. 2.50 at the head, with STRUKTURASTEEL steel wire and all the necessary Valente accessories to facilitate any manual operations. As already mentioned, the total area that will be reached by the 2024 planting is 18 hectares, to which another 3 hectares may be added shortly.
The selected form of cultivation is espalier, with the adoption of a planting pattern of 2.5 m between rows and 1 m along the row.
As for the grape varieties, these are certified VCR-grafted rooted cuttings, the varieties of which are: PDO ROMA BIANCO Bellone, Malvasia del Lazio, Vermentino and Incrocio Manzoni; PDO ROMA ROSSO Montepulciano, Sangiovese and Syrah. For PGI LAZIO BIANCO, rooted cuttings of the varieties Sauvignon blanc and Chardonnay are being planted; for PGI LAZIO ROSSO Syrah, Cabernet franc, Cabernet sauvignon and Merlot.
The vineyards are very young, but by designing the system as described above, an easy management of the canopy, excellent exposure and ripening of the grapes, and effective management of plant diseases are expected.

Moreover, the creation of vineyards in the Valle del Baccano is an entirely unique gamble that starts from the desire to create a wine-growing basin in an area that today has no plantings, but which has significant resources in terms of orography, pedology, location in relation to Rome, and association with other hospitality initiatives that could successfully convey the products obtained.
And we are proud to be part of this adventure, which began thanks to the company agronomist's knowledge of our materials and the appreciation of their excellent value for money.
