Here we are, after much talk and much anticipation, the approval of the decree on 'agrivoltaic' plants has arrived. This decree defines the technical and design modalities for the realisation of photovoltaic systems that will enable the continuity of agricultural and livestock farming activities on the installation site to be preserved, whilst guaranteeing a good energy production from renewable resources.
And very soon there will be the opening of the call for tenders on agrivoltaics financed by PNRR funds, which provides for the granting of a non-repayable contribution equal to 40% of the value of the work, subject to compliance with the provided requirements, first and foremost being farmers who practise farming as their main occupation.
There will certainly be the bureaucratic difficulties that always come with this type of initiatives, considering also that with a major grant of subsidies, compliance with all the parameters envisaged becomes imperative.
One of these is the maintenance or improvement of the quality of agricultural production, which must be pursued without compromise.
And this is precisely where the problems begin, as the first question arises: can I grow under the panels?
It is now well known that shade is not a friend to plant development, so equipping an orchard or vineyard with a series of photovoltaic panels installed above the cultivated rows implies shading which, using common sense, could bring disadvantages rather than improvements.
In order to find out whether these assumptions are true, an experimental campaign was launched focusing on understanding, and consequently being able to advise, which crops are more or less suitable for this type of situation.
Unfortunately, very little data has been acquired so far, also given the great variability of cultivation conditions, and certain and unquestionable information is currently almost impossible to find.
The trial will therefore have to continue before clear answers can be given; in the meantime, however, trying to imagine future scenarios, using experience in the agronomic field and taking into account the climate change that is heavily modifying the cultivation environment (e.g., plenty of sunny days at very high temperatures), it can be said that the shading generated by the installation of the panels would seem to bring some benefits rather than some discomfort.
With our solutions, in which the panels arranged along the direction of the row can move thanks to the installed solar tracking system, the shadow generated is constantly 'moving' and therefore the negative effect produced could be very modest or practically non-existent.
Another aspect to take into consideration could be the beneficial effect of temperature mitigation and the blocking of soil insolation; this would result in less evaporation of water from the soil and, consequently, better utilisation of this important resource.
This ability to reduce water use is a major achievement that will prove to be a key advantage for innovative agrivoltaic systems.
But returning to the shading topic, it is interesting to point out a research carried out by the University of Bologna concerning the cultivation of fruit trees in a shady environment. You are not going to believe it, but the results were truly astounding and, indeed, the fruit obtained was better than the fruit grown without shade.

This is obviously not a definitive answer, but it certainly represents a very important piece of data that gives us hope that it will be possible to cultivate even with the presence of photovoltaic panels above our plants.
The road is therefore mapped out, and trials will continue in order to obtain the expected answers.
Together with our partner I-Pergola we are also at the forefront of our contribution to research, since three new advanced Power Shield Tech agrivoltaic systems are being completed on different crops that will help us understand what kind of influence such plants will have on tree crops (but also in herbaceous crops).
The installations are located in Puglia, where citrus fruits are currently being cultivated, and in Umbria, where a proper experimental technology park is being set up in which different species will be cultivated on six different plots. The collection of data, with possible changes in agronomic practices, will give farmers a complete picture of the situation, providing them with a set of new cultivation practices that will guarantee the perfect farming even under the shade of the panels.
Certainly, the goal of being able to combine fruit cultivation and electricity production is a noble one, which we are confident will be achieved and turned into a great opportunity for the entire agricultural sector.
